Normally a two-day conference, we have adjusted the popular AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising program to be a flexible and digestible virtual learning experience on subsequent Tuesday and Thursday afternoons over the course of two weeks. Reserve these afternoons on your calendar: October 20, 22, 27, 29.

Fundamentals of Fundraising is an introductory course providing a comprehensive overview of essential fundraising principles. The course content covers the roles and responsibilities of fundraisers, with emphasis on responsibilities you are likely to encounter at the beginning of your career.

Michelle Johnson Overview of Fundraising Tuesday, October 20 2:00-3:00pm
Michelle Johnson is the Director of Development for Cascade Bicycle Club, the largest bike advocacy organization in the state. Prior to that, she spent 17 years as a fundraiser advocating for women’s and LGBTQ rights for Legal Voice and Planned Parenthood. As an Advancement Northwest board member, she has served a variety of roles including twice co-chairing the annual conference. Her volunteer experiences include serving in the Peace Corps, chairing the Community Advisory Board for HIV/AIDS Trail Unit, captaining teams with the Jet City Rollergirls, and more recently working with the boards of directors for The QLaw Foundation and OutRight International. She loves fundraising so much that she has taught in the Certificate of Nonprofit Management at the University of Washington. When she’s not passionately advocating for justice, she’s biking for social change, hiking or running these incredible mountains, and enjoying the microbrew scene in her neighborhood. A big-picture look at professional fundraising, including the important role philanthropy plays in organizations and key motivations behind why people give. Also included: the primary sources of contributions; the importance of ethics and accountability; what an integrated development program looks like and which essential components aid success; the fundraising profession as a career, focusing on key qualities for success and a basic path for personal and professional development in the field.
Maya Hemachandra Developing an Integrated Fundraising Program Tuesday, October 20 3:30-4:30pm
Maya Hemachandra (she/her) has made it her life’s work to create champions for social change. Her approach blends philanthropy, strategy, and empathy to engage individuals and companies in giving time and resources to addressing poverty in the Pacific Northwest. Since joining Solid Ground in 2016, she has challenged her team to undo inequities within their fundraising practices while dramatically increasing revenue from private and public sources. Maya helps train future nonprofit leaders through the University of Washington’s Certificate in Fundraising Management and Certificate in Nonprofit Management programs. Her career in the social sector has served our region for over nearly 20 years, supporting such agencies as United Way of Snohomish County, Women’s Funding Alliance, Seattle Goodwill, and Girl Scouts of Western Washington, where she is a long-serving troop volunteer. She holds an MPA from the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance and a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation. To effectively raise funds for an organization’s mission, it is important to have a comprehensive plan in place that articulates the organization’s case for support and includes appropriate giving opportunities. This module covers the importance of connecting that comprehensive plan with the organization’s overall mission and strategic plan. The module features an overview of campaign types (annual giving, major gifts, planned giving) with a focus on the key role of annual giving. Content includes establishing/ensuring that appropriate policies and procedures are in place to both ensure integrity of donor intent and to honor donors/volunteers in appropriate ways.
Christie Cotterill Marketing for Ongoing Success Thursday, October 22 2:00-3:00pm
Christie Cotterill serves as Associate Director of Development and Alumni Relations at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. As a nonprofit fundraising professional, her goal is to connect local philanthropists with causes about which they are passionate. She is honored to inspire donors and make sure they fully understand the impact of the support they provide and strongly believes in educating donors about the causes, not just individual missions, for greater community impact. Communicating information about fundraising activities to appropriate audiences (donors and prospective donors alike) and keeping all stakeholders informed about the organization’s progress is critical to ongoing and future success. Effective marketing is a key part of building and sustaining relationships for fundraising purposes. This module will cover creating a plan for marketing and communications activities that support development goals and strategies. It will also touch on the growing roles and importance of the Internet and social media in fundraising.
Thaddeus Teo Building & Sustaining Relationships Thursday, October 22 3:30-4:30pm
Thaddeus Teo, CFRE, Director of Development at the Seattle University School of Law, has  demonstrated accomplishments in major gifts, midlevel donor pipeline development, annual giving, and volunteer management. He is an excellent communicator dedicated to helping people align their passions to philanthropic opportunities. He is dedicated to advancing diversity and inclusion, community philanthropy, and volunteerism. Relationships are the key to fundraising success, and successful relationships start with knowing current and prospective donors well. This module will introduce the powerful role of prospect and donor research, including identifying and segmenting prospective donors and donors according to appropriate variables as well as effective donor records management to support ongoing relationships. Finally, cultivation, establishing and maintaining relationships with individuals and organizations, and optimizing relationships to retain donors rounds out the module.
Kyle Funakoshi Securing the Gift Tuesday, October 27 2:00-3:00pm
Kyle Funakoshi is the Director, Philanthropy – Northwest Region of the National Park Foundation. He has had a 14 year career in advancement. Prior to working with National Park Foundation, Kyle worked as Director of Alumni Relations at the University of Washington, and later as a major gift officer for UW’s College of the Environment. He was recognized with CASE District VIII Rising Star in 2007, and specializes in qualification work, portfolio building, integrated advancement and diversity/equity/inclusion work. He currently resides in Mukilteo, Washington. Once the development plan is in place and appropriate policies and procedures are set up, it’s time to actively solicit gifts from donors and prospective donors. In this module, a closer look will be taken at solicitation strategies for campaign types, focusing most closely on solicitation techniques for annual giving. Additionally, there will be an overview of techniques for soliciting major and planned gifts.
Alicia Crank Volunteers – Partners in Fundraising Tuesday, October 27 3:30-4:30pm
Alicia Crank is the Chief Development Officer for AtWork!, a highly supportive and innovative conduit between people with disabilities and employers in the community.  Prior to this role, she was a leader in major fundraising and partnership roles at YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish, CityYear Seattle, and Washington Business Week. A Detroit native, Alicia held several leadership positions in corporate banking, education, business, and the nonprofit sector in Silicon Valley. Having moved to Greater Seattle in 2014, she is now one of only a few women of color in corporate philanthropy. Alicia has served on several boards and commissions centered around equity and inclusion, and currently serves on City of Edmonds Planning Board as well as Vice Chair of the Snohomish County/Paine Field Airport Commission. Fundraising just wouldn’t be possible without dedicated volunteers supporting the organization’s efforts. Establishing and maintaining a respectful relationship with volunteers is both art and science, beginning with how they are recruited. This module will explore effective ways volunteers can be recruited, trained, managed, motivated, evaluated, and recognized. As importantly, there are times when volunteers are best included in the development process to ensure they experience a sense of ownership in the organization’s work and can effectively perform their roles.
Dr. Angela Beard Management & Accountability Thursday, October 29 2:00-4:00pm
Dr. Angela Beard is the Director of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at City University of Seattle. She is responsible for offering a wide range of high-quality educational opportunities to further strengthen nonprofit organizations throughout Washington State. Employing her extensive fundraising experience, she plans seminars, workshops, and webinars built around fundraising, governance, relationship building, and professional development for fundraisers. She is an experienced, innovative nonprofit professional committed to organizational effectiveness and philanthropic vitality. Fundraising is about more than soliciting donors and prospective donors, and the development office is responsible for managing the development plan. This module will present an overview of the management aspects of fundraising including budgeting, records management, gift processing, program evaluation, and the key roles and responsibilities of staff and volunteer leadership. The module ends with a look at accountability, basic legal requirements, and fundraising ethics in practice.
