AFP Advancement NW Ethics Summit
Last week, it was reported in The New York Times and in The Seattle Times that local hospital systems – Overlake Medical Center, Providence Regional Medical Center, and EvergreenHealth – offered donors and high-profile volunteers special early access to Covid-19 vaccination clinics and appointments. The invitations were extended by the Chief Philanthropic Officers of these organizations.
AFP Advancement Northwest condemns the egregious behavior and harm created by these healthcare organizations that chose to give donors preferential treatment by offering them access to the Covid-19 vaccine before the people and communities they had committed to serve.
We strongly encourage all fundraisers to review the AFP Code of Ethics, particularly: put philanthropic mission above personal gain and demonstrate concern for the interests and well-being of individuals affected by their actions.
In light of last week’s clear and obvious violations of the AFP Code of Ethics, the Board of Directors of AFP Advancement Northwest invites our fundraising community to come together for an Ethics Summit this Thursday, February 4. In this space we will process together, dialogue in breakout groups, and renew our commitment to ethical and just fundraising. Please share this invitation with your networks.
As we examine this glaring example of unethical behavior, we call on fundraisers and nonprofit leaders to seriously consider their own priorities and actions. Moments both small and large emerge every day where ethics and community should be prioritized.
As we grapple with a global pandemic, we as fundraisers have an incredible opportunity to lead our organizations and donors into a new, more equitable way of being – one that centers communities and mission fulfillment, not donor “appreciation.”
We are thankful for every fundraiser and nonprofit professional who continually works to build a more just and equitable world, one in which we acknowledge historically racist structures and systems and work to dismantle them.
This is a turning point. Let’s turn.
Now and together.
